With a growing need for
kids to be active, Kimberly (Algoe) Bettcher has
written “Sam Picks Football.” The book
encourages kids to put down their video games,
turn off the TV and go outside to play.
In the book for kids aged
five to eight, Sam sets up a game of football
for his friends. Through step by step
instructions and creative illustrations, all
kids can learn the rules of the game. They will
also see good examples of teamwork, the fun of
exercise and building friendships.
“I really wanted kids and
parents to be able to read the book and have a
step-by-step guide on how to set up a game,”
Bettcher said. “All they need is a football and
a game can begin!”
“Sam Picks Football” is the
first in the “A Way-to-Play Books” series. It
will give each character in the book an
opportunity to introduce a game or activity to
their friends.
“With obesity rates so
high, I feel that kids just need more ways to be
encouraged to play”. The colorful pictures by
Minnesota artist Sara J. Weingartner brings the
message together. “She really has done a
beautiful job with the illustrations” Bettcher
said.
Bettcher, a 1996 Sports
Management graduate and track athlete, has over
10 years of experience as a program director at
a fitness and aquatic center. A Way-to-Play
Books has allowed her to combine her love of
sports with her passion for writing children’s
books.
